Jurong Transformation …

Jurong now seems to be so far the best in achieving a good balance of residential and commercial development, as well as long-term plans …

Jurong Stories …

1960s to 2000s | Driving Singapore's Developing Economy
  • Jurong was developed as Singapore’s first industrial town in 1961 to drive our industrialisation efforts and create jobs for Singaporeans.
  • Public housing estates were built in areas such as Teban Gardens and Taman Jurong so that workers and their families could live close by.
  • Recreational spaces such as Jurong Lake, Science Centre, and the Chinese and Japanese Gardens were also built to enhance the living environment.
  • In 1991, the land around the Jurong East MRT interchange was designated as a regional centre to create more jobs outside the city.
    • International Business Park (Singapore’s first business park for knowledge-based activities) and JTC Summit (headquarters for JTC Corporation) were among the first developments.
  • Five decades on, the former swamp is now a manufacturing hub for many high-value industries and an attractive residential town.
2008 to 2025s | Changing the Industrial Character of Jurong
  • Jurong Regional Centre became Jurong Lake District (JLD) in 2008, with a new plan to help shed its industrial image and bring more offices, retail, homes and leisure to the area.
  • Today, JLD brings some of the buzz, brands and mix of uses of the city to western Singapore.
  • Locating the terminus of the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) in JLD is a game-changer. It will make the district a gateway for cross-border business and travel.
  • With the potential to plug into regional growth opportunities, JLD will be developed as Singapore’s second Central Business District (CBD).
2026 and Beyond | Leveraging New Connectivity for Future Opportunities
  • Cities grow around transport hubs.
  • Come 2026, travellers will dash between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in 90 minutes on high-speed trains.
  • Connections to the rest of Singapore will also improve when the Jurong Region Line and Cross-Island Line are completed.
  • The next phase of JLD will take shape around the High-Speed Rail station, with new offices, housing, hotels, retail, F&B and other leisure offerings set within delightful spaces.
  • A major pedestrian mall will connect the HSR and Jurong East MRT stations, creating a seamless link for commuters and forming the main commercial spine along which the second CBD will grow.
  • JLD will take many decades to realise — at least 2040 and beyond. When completed, more than 100,000 new jobs and 20,000 new homes will be created. Similar to how Jurong was turned into an industrial powerhouse 50 years ago, JLD is set to transform the west of Singapore once again.

Jurong Lake District

Jurong East, together with Jurong Lake, offers an exciting opportunity to be developed into the biggest lakeside destination for business and leisure. The two areas are jointly known as the Jurong Lake District.

The 360ha Jurong Lake District is envisioned to become a ‘District of the Future’, the second CBD (Central Business District) in Singapore, a high-quality mixed-use business district, redefining the way we live, work and play.

Whistler Grand Location Map

It features 3 precincts:

  • Jurong Gateway, the existing commercial precinct around Jurong East MRT station. It is shaping up well with the completion of several projects such as JEM, the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability, Genting Hotel Jurong and the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Other projects are expected to be progressively completed in the coming years.
  • Lakeside Gateway, a new mixed-use business precinct around the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High-Speed Rail (HSR) terminus, that will provide an ecosystem for innovation, integrated seamlessly with Jurong Gateway, forming Singapore’s second CBD.
  • Lakeside, the leisure precinct around Jurong Lake with a new national garden (Jurong Lake Garden) and Science Centre to promote the spirit of community and learning, creating an environment that showcases ecology and sustainable living.
